Decisions, decisions…
Back over at the main page I’ve decided that sticking with Postnuke seems to be the right decision. Whilst a move would enable more features, productivity, and safety there are many downsides too. For example, links to the site will be screwy and I will have to recreate the downloads centre no matter what CMS I move to.
So here is the biggy, I can either use vb4journal under Postnuke on the main domain or useWordpress for this part of the site. I could also simply use the news feature of Postnuke and block these posts from the main page, creating a separate catagory on a different page. Vb4journal gives me the separation from the main site news that I desire, whilst still being inside the original domain; however, it is lacking in aesthetics and blogging features. Wordpress offers me a separation, productivity, and all the other benefits of standalone blog software (such as trackbacks and pinging,) however, it seems to ‘distant’ or unique from the main domain, almost as if it were a standalone venture. In addition, I have to deal with two pieces of software to update, maintain, etc. Or finally, I can use non-frontpage articles, which provides integration and separation at the same time; however, this will probably mess up my RSS feed.
Yup, someone is actually doing some work on this domain. The whole of http://www.tech-rant.com/ is going to be migrated across to Wordpress. I will change the theme too, this one is just here as I have more important things to work on, cosmetics will come last. My only pain with Wordpress is migrating the downloads database, as this software does not have a downloads module/plugin as standard, and the third-party ones are slightly inadequate for my needs. That’s probably because Wordpress is usually used for blogs, where such functionality is not needed.
